movie

Short video we took showing a calm Queen Honey Bee moving over her comb and laying eggs.

Honey bees flying into the hive in slow motion

movie

I absolutely love sitting by my bee hives and watching these wonderful busy ladies fly around arriving with legs full of pollen or bellies full of nectar. How they fly is just as exciting as when they land. When you know that a typical bee goes to 50 or more flowers before returning to the colony its just amazing watching their aerial acrobatics. This spring I got an Iphone 6 and the pic/video quality is amazing. I often use this quick camera for our activities around the hive. I found a feature that I didn't immediately see a use for in my daily activities until I used it to slow down the bees flying into the hive.

Honeybee stinger in freckled skin

Studies have found that 15% to 20% of people who are asked will say they’re allergic to bee stings, yet medical evaluations find it’s actually only about 1%.

If you are stung by a honey bee, one of the most important things to do is not to panic. Panic by the person stung or those around him/her can produce a systemic reaction in itself. Many people believethey are allergic to honey bees when in fact they are experiencing symptoms of a normal reaction. Only a very limited portion of the population (one or two out of 1000) is allergic or hypersensitive to bee or wasp stings.

 Did you know that...

  • Bees have 5 eyes
  • Bees are insects, so they have 6 legs
  • Male bees in the hive are called drones
  • Bees fly about 20 mph
  • Female bees in the hive (except the queen) are called worker bees
  • Number of eggs laid by queen: 2,000 per day is the high
  • Losing its stinger will cause a bee to die
  • Bees have been here about 30 million years!

Life cycle of a bee

Honeybees belong to the order Hymenoptera, which includes other bees, wasps, and ants. Most Hymenoptera have two pairs of clear wings; all have chewing mouthparts. Some, including the honeybee, can suck up liquids. These insects undergo complete metamorphosis, or change in form, during their development. The four life stages are: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

Queen Honeybee

The three distinct kinds of honeybees in a colony are queen, worker, and drone.

The Queen

The queen is the longest bee in the hive but has the shortest wings. She is the mother of all the other bees. Her most important job is to lay eggs.
